Lab-Grown Diamonds: A Straightforward Guide
Lab-grown diamonds have gone from a niche option to a mainstream conversation in a very short time. If you want to understand what is going on without wading through marketing from either side, here is the honest version.
They Are Real Diamonds
A lab-grown diamond is not glass, not cubic zirconia, not moissanite. It is a genuine diamond: pure carbon in a cubic crystal structure, with the same chemical composition, the same optical properties, and the same hardness as a natural diamond. The only difference is how it got here. One was formed deep in the earth over billions of years. The other was grown in a laboratory over a matter of weeks. That is the actual distinction.
How They Are Made
Two main methods exist. High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) replicates the conditions under which natural diamonds form: extreme pressure and heat applied to a carbon source around a seed crystal. Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) grows diamonds layer by layer from a carbon-rich gas in a vacuum chamber. Both produce real diamonds. The method used can sometimes be identified under specialist equipment but has no bearing on quality or appearance.
Can You Tell the Difference
No, not by looking. Not with standard gemological equipment either. Specialist instruments developed specifically to detect subtle differences in growth patterns are required. A jeweller cannot look at a lab diamond and a natural diamond side by side and tell them apart visually. Both are graded and certified using the same Four Cs criteria by the same laboratories.
The Price
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50 to 70 percent less than mined diamonds of equivalent size and quality. That gap has widened as production technology has improved. For a buyer who wants the most diamond, in terms of size and cut quality, that a given budget can provide, lab-grown is a genuinely compelling option.
The One Honest Difference
Resale value. Natural diamonds have historically held their value better over time. As lab diamond production has scaled up and retail prices have fallen, resale values have followed suit. If long-term value matters to you, a natural mined diamond has the stronger track record. If you are focused on wearing and enjoying the most beautiful diamond your budget allows, lab-grown offers something natural diamonds at the same price point simply cannot match.
